The Year Saratov Was Founded – Tihon Kazanets' Chronicle

A chronicle record on the foundation of Saratov, Russia

Tihon Kazanets was a chronicler in the Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius from 1630 till 1640. This cloister is now called the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius. The monastery is located in the town of Sergiyev Posad, around 70 km to the north-east from Moscow, Russia.

Tihon entered this record in the annals: "And in 98th the town of Saratov was built".

The chronicle manuscript is kept in the State Historical Museum of Russia (Synod collection №415) where it is stored on pages 312–313. The manuscript is in the form of collected articles written in cursive of the 17th century.

Little Known Chronicle Monuments of the 16th Century, Russia

Tihon Kazanets' chronicle in modern Russian came to light thanks to work by famous Russian historian Mikhail Nikolayevich Tikhomirov. The results of his research were put together in a paper "Little Known Chronicle Monuments of 16 Century".

The manuscript text analysis brought the scientist to a conclusion that the chronicle was made in about 1602 by a prikaz clerk from Kazan or Nizhny Novgorod. The monastic elder Tihon's nickname also suggests that the collected articles most likely had Kazan origin.

The work "Little Known Chronicle Monuments of 16 Century" was published in 1941 in the scientific journal "Historical Notes" of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
